3M ATTITUDE 3 - How RX Safety Glasses Work

Requiring a refractive correction for your eyes is not the end of the world. It just means that you need a reliable pair of glasses. This is important at a workplace where projectiles; debris; splinters; sawdust; splashes of liquid or any other blunt trauma inducing threat is existent. However, accurate vision is an indispensable requirement at work. This article attempts to explain how vision works and what is needed to correct vision to enable workers to be productive & safe from workplace hazards.

Basics of Vision

Without light, we cannot see. We exist in an environment where light is scattered in every direction. Our eyes help focus the scattered light emitted from a source and help form images on the back of our eye, which is called retina. The retina then sends signals to our brain which then helps us to perceive the actual image of the object.

The primary purpose of the lens is either to bring scattered light to a focal point in order to focus better or bend the light rays outwards. The former is done by means of convex lenses (having a thicker center) & the latter by a concave lens (having a thinner center).

Correcting Near & Far-Sighted Vision

Our lenses are able to change shape according to the given distance between the eye & object in focus. People with vision problems are largely unable to focus due to the inability of the retina to change shape accordingly.

In case of far-sighted vision, the retina is up too close to the lens to adjust the focus of light. Hence, people with the very vision problem cannot focus on objects close to their eyes. This is when the eyeball is smaller in size and unable to change its size. This is due to the distance between retina & the focal point (where the light has to be brought to a single point of focus). Convex lenses are of help here (are marked with + diopters), as they help in bringing the central focal point of the light close to the retina.

Conversely, near-sightedness presents the opposite problem. The focal point is quite ahead of the retina. Concave lenses (marked with - diopters) help here as they help spread the light enough that they form a focal point on the retina to help see better.

Why choose 3M?

By & large, 3M Attitude 3 is a comprehensive piece of eyewear which combines vision correction along with the industry standard safety assurance against workplace hazards.
